Trust: The Surrender List

Trust is easier to talk about than to actually do.

You know this. You have heard sermons on trust. You have read books. You have highlighted verses. And still, when you are in the middle of the situation, the trust seems to evaporate. You are back to gripping. Back to planning. Back to lying awake at 3am running the scenarios.

This week's theme: Trust.

Today, one small practice that turns trust from an idea into a habit.

The practice is called the surrender list. Here is how it works.

Take a piece of paper. At the top, write "Things I am handing to God today." Then list them. Not all your problems. Just the ones that are gripping you today.

Write them plainly. Not spiritual language. Real language.

The situation with my son. My income for October. The medical test results. The conversation I need to have with my sister. The direction of my career. My child's future. The relationship I am not sure about. The addiction I cannot beat on my own.

Whatever your list is. It is your list. Nobody else needs to see it.

Once you have the list, do one thing with it. Beside each item, write these three words. "This is yours."

That is the practice.

You are not solving anything. You are naming the things you have been holding, and formally handing them over. Some of them will come back into your grip within an hour. Some of them will feel like they never left. That is normal. But the act of naming and handing has done something. It has moved the situation from the shadows of your worry into the light of a specific transaction with God.

Read the verse.

"Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will act." - Psalm 37:5

The word "commit" here is galal in Hebrew. It means to roll. It is the picture of rolling a heavy stone off you and onto someone else. It is deliberate, physical, and complete.

The surrender list is the modern version of galal. You are rolling the specific weight of specific situations from yourself to God. You do not have to have earned the right. You do not have to have prayed hard enough first. You just have to roll it.

Do it once today. If the list feels too long, that is proof of how badly you need this practice. If the list feels too short, you are probably not being honest with yourself yet.

Come back to the list tomorrow. Read the items. Notice which ones you grabbed back. Roll them again. And again. And again.

Trust, in practice, is a hundred small rolls a week.

YOUR ONE THING FOR TODAY

Make the surrender list today. Actual paper if you can. Do not rush it. Write "This is yours" next to each item. Come back to it tomorrow.

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father, teach me to roll instead of carry. Take the list I have handed you today. When I try to take things back, remind me they are yours now. Amen.

If today's practice landed, this video walks through a specific Bible verse that has been quietly changing how people approach anxiety, and it pairs well with the surrender list.

OVER TO YOU

What is on your surrender list today? One line, or one word. Every reply read.

God bless you, my friend.
