Surrender: The Teenager Who Said Yes
There is a scene in Luke 1 that reads so quickly most readers walk past the weight of what is actually happening.
A teenage girl is going about her day in a small town in Galilee. She is engaged to a carpenter named Joseph. Her life is small, ordinary, and about to follow the normal shape of a young woman's life in first century Palestine. Marry Joseph. Have children. Keep a home. Grow old.
Then an angel appears to her.
The angel tells her she will conceive a son, not by Joseph, and that the son will be the long-promised Messiah. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever. His kingdom will have no end.
Mary is confused. She asks the obvious practical question. "How can this be, since I am a virgin?" The angel explains that the Holy Spirit will come upon her and the child will be the Son of God.
This week's theme: Surrender.
Today, what Mary said next, and why it may be the greatest act of surrender in scripture.
Read her response.
"I am the Lord's servant. May your word to me be fulfilled." - Luke 1:38
Read it slowly. Twice.
Notice what Mary does not do.
She does not negotiate. She does not ask for more information. She does not say "let me think about it." She does not point out, reasonably, that an unmarried pregnancy in her culture could result in her being disowned, publicly shamed, or in extreme cases stoned to death. She does not ask what Joseph will think, or her parents, or the town.
She says one sentence. May your word to me be fulfilled.
That is surrender. Not surrender in the abstract. Surrender in the specific, costly, life-altering moment, by a teenage girl who had every reason to say no.
Think about what she was actually agreeing to. Her engagement would almost certainly be broken. Her reputation would be destroyed. Her future would be rewritten in a way she had no map for. The social, financial, and personal cost was enormous. And the only promise she had was the word of an angel, which she had never seen before, standing in her room.
She said yes anyway.
Here is what makes Mary's story so useful for us.
Most of us have been taught to think of surrender as a feeling. A sense of peace about handing something over. A warm willingness that God will produce in us if we pray hard enough. We wait for the feeling, and when it does not come, we conclude we are not ready to surrender yet.
Mary did not wait for the feeling. She was confused. The text explicitly says she was greatly troubled. There is no indication she felt peaceful about what she was agreeing to. She just said yes.
Surrender is not the absence of fear or confusion. It is the decision made in the middle of the fear and confusion. It is saying "may your word to me be fulfilled" before you understand how it will all work out.
If you are waiting to feel ready to surrender something to God, you may wait forever. The feeling rarely comes first. The surrender comes first, and the peace follows later, sometimes much later.
Mary teaches us the order. Yes first. Everything else after.
YOUR ONE THING FOR TODAY
Pray Mary's prayer today, out loud if you can. "I am the Lord's servant. May your word to me be fulfilled." Say it over the specific area of your life you are being asked to surrender. Do not wait to feel ready.
A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Father, teach me Mary's yes. Help me surrender before I feel ready. Give me the courage of a teenage girl who said yes to the hardest news she had ever heard. Amen.
