Surrender: The Second Decision Most Christians Never Make

Most Christians have made one decision to surrender in their life.

The moment they first said yes to Jesus. The altar call, or the quiet prayer in the car, or the late-night conversation with a friend that cracked something open. Whatever the specific moment, they handed over their eternal destination and asked God to take it from there.

That decision mattered. It still does. But most of us have been quietly treating it as the only surrender we were ever asked to make.

It is not.

This week's theme: Surrender.

Today, the second decision that follows the first, and why most of our frustration with the Christian life traces back to never having made it.

Read what Jesus said to anyone who wanted to follow him.

"Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me." - Luke 9:23

Read the word "daily."

Jesus did not say "take up your cross once and get it over with." He did not say "surrender your eternity to me and then live however you like until you die." He said daily. Every morning. Every ordinary Monday. Every decision point.

Surrender, in the way Jesus described it, is not a one-off transaction. It is a rhythm. A posture. A continuing choice to lay down what you have been clutching, and let him have it instead.

Most of us never made that second decision. We made the first one, meant it, and then quietly went back to running our own life while calling it Christian. We prayed. We read the Bible. We showed up on Sunday. But the daily surrender, the actual handing over of what we are gripping today, we skipped.

That is why so much of modern Christian life feels low-grade exhausting. We are trying to live from salvation we received, while still carrying the weight of a life we never actually handed over. That is a heavy way to live.

The invitation of surrender is not to earn anything. You cannot. The first decision settled that. The invitation is to let the one who died for you also run your Monday. Your money. Your relationships. Your plans for the next five years. Your fears about the thing you have not told anyone.

All of it. Not once. Daily.

This week we are going to walk through surrender from several angles. Tomorrow, a teenage girl who said yes to the hardest news she had ever heard. Wednesday, the specific grip we hold without noticing. Thursday, a small daily practice. Friday, the hard truth about what we are refusing to hand over. Saturday, the Greek word paradidomi. Sunday, Psalm 37.

For now, one question.

What have you been clutching that Jesus has been quietly waiting for you to hand over?

YOUR ONE THING FOR TODAY

Name one specific area of your life you have not surrendered. Not in theory. Specifically. Then, out loud if you can, say "this is yours." That is the start of the second decision.

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father, forgive me for making the first decision and skipping the second. Teach me this week what daily surrender actually looks like. Help me hand over what I have been running on my own. Amen.

OVER TO YOU

What is one area of your life you have been running yourself that you suspect he has been quietly asking for? A word or a line. Every reply read.

God bless you, my friend.
