Hey my friend welcome to the latest edition of my newsletter, thanks for being here! God bless you, now let's get into it.
Most of what leaves your mouth today will not have been chosen.
It will have been reflex. The comeback that arrived before you thought about it. The tone that matched your tiredness. The comment that felt right in the moment and would have felt wrong five seconds later. Almost none of it will pass through anything you would call a filter.
This week's theme: Speech.
Today, the practical one. A small gate to build between what you feel and what you say, and how to actually use it in the middle of a normal day.
THE THREE SECOND GATE
Here's the practice. Three seconds.
Not between every sentence. That would be exhausting and weird. Just in the moments when you feel the reflex fire. The moments when a sharp response is already forming, or a joke at someone's expense is halfway to your lips, or a comment about someone not in the room is queued and ready.
In those moments, three seconds. That's the gate.
Three seconds is not a long time. It won't feel like a spiritual discipline. It will feel like a very small pause. But three seconds is enough to let one specific question form in your head.
"Would I be glad I said this ten minutes from now?"
That's the whole gate. One question, three seconds, then either the words go through or they don't.
Read what the writer of Proverbs says.
"Do you see someone who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for them."
That is a genuinely severe verse. More hope for a fool. The Hebrew word for "haste" here is uwts, which means to press, to hurry, to be urgent. It's the sense of a word forced out under pressure without room around it.
The Bible isn't warning against being expressive. It's warning against being pressurised. Words spoken under pressure almost always cost more than they earn.
Three seconds relieves the pressure. That is the whole mechanism.
Then, if the words pass the gate, they'll usually come out warmer, or more honest, or better-timed. If they don't pass, they'll be words you're glad you didn't say, and you'll never miss them.
There are three specific moments the gate works best.
One. When someone has just criticised you.
The reflex is defence. The sharp comeback. The reason why they're wrong. Three seconds gives you enough room to actually hear what they said, and to respond to it rather than react to it. Most of the time, the response after three seconds is significantly better than the reflex would have been.
Two. When someone is not in the room.
The reflex is the comment about them. The wry observation. The judgement dressed up as insight. Three seconds gives you enough room to ask whether you would say it to their face. Almost always, the answer is no. And if the answer is no, the words shouldn't leave your mouth.
Three. When you're tired.
The reflex is the sharper tone, the shorter fuse, the sentence that has more edge than it needs. Three seconds is often enough to notice that you're tired, which is often enough to soften the sentence before it lands on someone who did nothing to deserve it.
None of this is complicated. It's just three seconds and one question.
The reason most people don't build this practice isn't that it's hard. It's that they never decide to. The words leave the mouth on autopilot because they have always left the mouth on autopilot. Nobody put a gate in.
Build the gate today. It's small. It's free. It doesn't require anyone else to know you're doing it.
And within a week, you'll notice something. The number of sentences you regret at 11pm will drop. Sometimes to zero.
That is not a small win. That is one of the largest wins available to you spiritually right now.
Three seconds. One question. That's the whole practice.
YOUR ONE THING FOR TODAY
Use the gate at least once today.
You will feel the reflex fire. You always do. When you feel it, pause for three seconds and ask, "would I be glad I said this ten minutes from now?"
Then let the words either go through or die. One use of the gate today. That's the win.
