Hey my friend welcome to the latest edition of my newsletter, thanks for being here! God bless you, now let's get into it.

There is a voice inside your head that has been talking to you for years, and it is almost certainly not God's.

It calls you the same things it has always called you. It uses the same tone. It shows up in the same situations. And most of the time, you don't even register it as speech, because it has been running in the background for so long that it sounds like the truth.

This week's theme: Speech.

Today, the hard truth. The most damaging words you speak this week will not be the ones you say to anyone else.

THE VOICE THAT ISN'T GOD

Listen for it this week. It has predictable phrases.

  • "You always do this."

  • "You're going to fail."

  • "They probably don't actually like you."

  • "You're too much."

  • "You're not enough."

  • "Who do you think you are."

  • "You should be further along by now."

  • "You don't deserve this."

You know your version. Everyone has one. It formed early, usually before you had language for it, and it has been reinforced by decades of casual use. It sounds like your own voice. It uses your own vocabulary. It knows exactly which buttons to press because you built the buttons.

But it isn't God's voice.

God's voice has a specific tone in scripture, and it is worth learning to recognise. When God speaks to people in the Bible, even when he corrects them, even when he confronts them, there is almost always a specific pattern. He names them. He reminds them who they are. He calls forward what he is doing in them.

He does not tear people down. He does not sneer. He does not humiliate.

That is not God's voice inside your head.

Read what Zephaniah writes about God's voice over his people.

"The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing."

Zephaniah 3:17

Read that twice. Slowly.

Delight. Love. Singing.

That is God's voice over you. That is what he sounds like. If the voice inside your head sounds nothing like that, it is time to stop treating it as trustworthy.

Here is the hard truth that Friday exists for.

You have been letting a voice run your inner life that would horrify you if a friend spoke to you the same way. If someone in your life said to you, out loud, half of what you say to yourself in a normal week, you would end the friendship. You would call it abuse. You would tell someone else how they treated you.

But because the voice is inside your own head, in your own vocabulary, you have accepted it. You have called it "just how I think." You have thought of it as personality. Or realism. Or humility.

It isn't any of those things. It is a voice, and it is speaking words over you, and those words are shaping you every single day.

James writes that with the tongue we bless God and curse people made in God's image, and says "my brothers and sisters, this should not be."

You are made in God's image too.

Cursing yourself is not humility. Cursing yourself is not spiritual. Cursing yourself is not honesty about your flaws. It is speaking words of death over someone God has spoken words of delight over, and it needs to stop.

The way it stops is not by silencing the voice. You cannot. The voice is old and clever and it will keep speaking. The way it stops is by refusing to agree with it. When it says, "you always do this," you say, out loud if you can, "no. God is doing something new in me." When it says, "you're not enough," you say, "I am chosen, and loved, and his."

You do not have to feel it. You just have to say it.

The mind is renewed by repetition, not intensity. Same rule as always. Say the true sentence enough times, and the false one starts to lose its authority.

The voice inside your head is not God. Stop letting it speak for him.

YOUR ONE THING FOR TODAY

Catch one sentence the inner voice says to you today. Just one.

Then say the opposite out loud. Or say a scripture over yourself. Or say a name God has given you. Any of those will do.

You are not fighting the voice. You are refusing to agree with it. That's the whole shift.

Father, forgive me for the years I have let a voice that is not yours speak over me. Teach me your voice. Help me hear you delighting, not sneering. Help me speak truer words over myself today than the ones I have accepted for so long. Rejoice over me. I need it. Amen.

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

OVER TO YOU

What is one sentence the inner voice keeps saying to you? Hit reply. One line. I read every one, and I hold them gently.

God bless you, my friend.
