Hey my friend welcome to the latest edition of my newsletter, thanks for being here! If this blesses you, share it with someone who needs it. They can sign up free at thelowkeychristian.com/newsletter. God bless you, now let's get into it.
Watch what happens the next time you speak to someone you live with.
Watch their face in the second after your words land. Not what they say back. What their face does. The tiny softening or the tiny bracing. The lean in or the small step away. It happens faster than most of us track, but it happens every time.
Your voice is doing something to them. It has been doing something to them for a long time.
This week's theme: Speech.
Today, the honest one. What our words are actually doing to the people who hear them most.
FOUNTAIN OR SLOW LEAK
There are people whose voice, if you live with them, is a fountain.
They walk into a room and something in the air lifts. Their comments make you feel more like yourself, not less. Their humour includes you instead of costing you. Their honesty, when it comes, arrives with warmth attached, not superiority. You leave conversations with them larger, and you'd struggle to explain exactly why.
Then there are people whose voice, if you live with them, is a slow leak.
Not a dramatic one. Not the kind you could point to and complain about. Just the small unkind comment dressed up as a joke. The eye roll delivered while laughing. The sarcastic response to something said in good faith. The correction offered when no correction was asked for. The dig, half-buried in humour, that both of you know isn't really a joke.
The person on the receiving end of a slow leak rarely names it. They just, over months, start holding back. Sharing less. Laughing less easily. Stop reaching in the small ways they used to. They are still there. They are still kind. But something has gone quiet, and it has gone quiet in the exact rhythm of the leaking voice.
Read what Proverbs says.
"The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit."
Life and death. Not helpful or unhelpful. Not big or small. Life or death.
That verse used to sound like hyperbole to me. It isn't. Your voice is either building someone up or slowly wearing them down. There is no neutral setting on a mouth that speaks daily into someone's life.
Here is the sentence that changes this for most of us when we finally hear it.
Your voice is one of the loudest voices in someone's life.
Probably more than one someone. Maybe several. Your partner. Your children. The colleague in the desk next to you. The friend you text every day. The parent you ring on Sundays. They carry what you say to them, whether or not you meant it seriously. Your voice becomes the score under their whole day.
Most of us don't think of ourselves that way. We think of our voice as background music. Just our normal way of talking. But of course it isn't background music to the people who hear it constantly. It is the soundtrack. And the soundtrack is doing something. Every day. All day.
If you are a fountain, keep going. The world has very few, and the people who live with you know how rare you are, even if they've never said so.
If you are a slow leak, the fix isn't dramatic. You don't need to sit anyone down. You don't need to give a speech. You just start catching the first small unkind comment before it leaves your mouth, and either not saying it, or replacing it with something honest and warm instead.
It will feel awkward at first. Almost performed. Like you're speaking a language you haven't used in a while.
Within a few weeks, the thing that has been going quiet in the person you love will start coming back. The reaching. The laughing. The small ways they used to trust you with themselves.
Because voices change rooms. Yours has been changing theirs for years already.
The question is only what direction.
YOUR ONE THING FOR TODAY
Think of one person you speak to most days. Then ask yourself honestly. Is your voice a fountain or a slow leak in their life?
If it's a fountain, thank God for that today and keep going.
If it's a slow leak, don't spiral. Just notice. Then, the next time you speak to them, catch the first thing you were going to say that would have leaked, and either don't say it, or say something warm instead. That is the whole shift.
Father, forgive me for the times I have used my voice to slowly wear people down while telling myself it was harmless. Show me who I have been leaking into. Give me the courage to change it. Make my mouth a fountain today, especially to the people who hear me most. Amen.
OVER TO YOU
Whose voice has been a fountain in your life? Hit reply with their first name. I read every one, and I might just send them a quiet thank you in prayer today.
God bless you, my friend.
