Saturday is deep dive day.
If you're new here, welcome. On Saturdays we take one thing from the week and go deeper into what it actually says in the original language, because sometimes the English carries a lot less than the Hebrew or Greek was carrying.
This week's theme: Speech.
Today, a single Hebrew word that changes how you think about every word you have ever said.
DABAR
The Hebrew word for "word" is dabar.
You'll find it hundreds of times in the Old Testament. It gets translated in English as "word," "speech," "saying," "matter." Standard vocabulary. Nothing that should stop you in your tracks.
Except that dabar also means something else.
It means "thing."
Same word. Same spelling. Same root. In Hebrew, the word for "word" and the word for "thing" are identical. When an Old Testament writer wants to describe an object, an event, or a matter in the world, he reaches for the same word he would use to describe something spoken out of a mouth.
Let that sit for a second.
To the Hebrew mind, a word wasn't a symbol pointing at a thing. A word was a thing. A spoken word had a kind of reality. It occupied space. It did work in the world. Once it left your mouth, it existed. And whatever it was, it kept existing, and it kept doing something, whether you tracked it or not.
That is why Genesis 1 reads the way it does.
"And God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light."
Notice what happens. God speaks. Light exists. There is no gap between the word and the thing. The word is the thing coming into being.
The whole creation account is built on this. God speaks, and reality forms. Not because there is magic in the syllables, but because God's words are dabar. They carry the weight of what they name. They do not just describe. They create.
And then, made in the image of that speaking God, we are given mouths of our own.
Read Proverbs 18:21 again in this light.
"The tongue has the power of life and death."
That verse stops being poetic. It becomes structural. Your words are not sounds fading into air. In the Hebrew imagination, they are things. They occupy space. They do work. Something you said to your child ten years ago is still, in some sense, out there, shaping something. Something you said to yourself this morning has already begun to work on you.
You have been speaking things into being for years without realising it.
This is not a mystical claim. It is an observational one. Anyone who has raised a child, or led a team, or been married for a while knows the truth of it. Words shape the world around them. They form atmospheres. They form beliefs. They form self-images. They form relationships. The thing you kept saying, over months, becomes the thing that is.
That is what Hebrew already knew.
There is one more thing worth noticing. When the New Testament writer John wants to describe Jesus at the very beginning of his gospel, he reaches for this same idea.
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
The Greek there is Logos, which carries some but not all of what dabar was doing. And John is deliberate. Jesus is not just a message from God. He is the dabar of God made flesh. The thing that God has been speaking since the beginning, walking around, in a body, in first century Palestine.
If Jesus is the ultimate Word, and if our words carry a fragment of the same nature, then what we speak is more than we thought it was. It always has been.
Every word is a thing. Every thing lasts.

YOUR ONE THING FOR TODAY
Notice today, at least once, when you speak.
Not what you say. Just that you spoke. Notice the word leaving your mouth and becoming a thing in the world.
You are creating with your voice today. You always have been. Notice it.
Father, thank you for the mystery of my own mouth. Teach me to remember that my words are things. Help me speak life today, not death. Help me create with my voice the kind of world you would create. Amen.
