I said something last week to my young daughter I've been thinking about ever since.

Nothing enormous. Nothing anyone else would remember. Just a throwaway comment, delivered with a bit more edge than I meant, in a moment when I was tired and looking for something to be right about. I soon apologised and we moved on but I've been carrying it quietly for six days.

This week's theme: Speech.

Today, why the thing that comes out of your mouth matters more than almost anything else you do, and why most of us are quietly getting this wrong.

SPEECH

There is a book in the Bible that goes harder on the tongue than almost any other subject.

It is the book of James. And when James gets to the tongue, in chapter three, he does not soften it.

"The tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of one's life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell"

James 3:5-6

That is not gentle language. Set on fire by hell. James doesn't do subtle.

But look at the image he chooses. A spark and a forest. A tiny thing that ends up destroying a landscape. The scale mismatch is the whole point. Something small, thrown carelessly, ends up costing more than you could have imagined when you threw it.

That is what our words do. Almost always.

The offhand comment about your husband to your friend. The joke at your colleague's expense in the group chat. The tone you took with your child this morning when they wouldn't put their shoes on. The way you spoke to yourself in the mirror before you left the house. The gossip you told yourself was concern.

None of it felt like a fire when you spoke it. It felt small. It felt normal. It felt earned.

And a week later, or a month later, or a year later, something has quietly burned down that you cannot rebuild.

Here is what I've had to accept, slowly. My words are one of the most spiritually significant things about me. Not because they are dramatic. Because they are constant. I speak thousands of them a day. And most of the time I speak them on autopilot, without the smallest pause between what I feel and what leaves my mouth.

That is not a personality quirk. That is a spiritual condition. And James names it directly.

The rest of chapter three is worse. He calls the tongue a restless evil. He points out that the same mouth blesses God and curses people made in God's image, and says "my brothers and sisters, this should not be." He compares it to a horse's bit, a ship's rudder, a small thing that steers something huge.

This week, we are going to take his warning seriously.

Tomorrow we look at a prophet who had a vision of God and immediately noticed his own mouth was the problem. Wednesday I'll be honest about a season of my life where my speech was killing something I loved. Thursday, a small practice. Friday, the hard truth about the words we speak over ourselves. Saturday, back to the Hebrew, and what the word "word" actually means. Sunday, we rest with Psalm 19:14.

For now, one question.

If someone recorded everything that came out of your mouth this week, and played it back to you on Sunday, what would you cringe at?

YOUR ONE THING FOR TODAY

Notice your speech today. That is all.

You are not trying to fix it. You are not trying to be silent. You are just paying attention to what leaves your mouth, especially when you are tired, or annoyed, or trying to be funny.

Awareness is where every change starts. Notice.

Father, my words leave my mouth faster than I can weigh them. Show me what I have been saying that I should not have been saying. Show me what I have been leaving unsaid that I should have said. Set a guard over my mouth this week. Teach me the weight of my own voice. Amen.

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

OVER TO YOU

God bless you, my friend.
