Rest: The Sabbath You Have Been Missing
There is one spiritual discipline that most modern Christians have quietly abandoned.
It is not prayer. It is not Bible reading. It is not tithing. It is the fourth commandment. Sabbath. Rest.
We do not talk about it much. We treat it as an Old Testament optional. A Jewish thing that Jesus fulfilled and therefore we no longer need to worry about. In practice, most Christians work seven days a week in one form or another, and quietly wonder why their souls feel dry.
This week's theme: Rest.
Today, the practical. One small Sabbath practice you can start this week.
The command is clearer than we like to admit.
"Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labour and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work." - Exodus 20:8-10
That is not a suggestion. It is one of the ten. God carved it into stone in the same list as "do not murder" and "do not steal." He was serious about it.
But here is where most modern Christians get stuck. We think of Sabbath as a full twenty-four-hour lockdown of activity that requires an entirely different lifestyle. And because we cannot see how to do that, we do nothing.
The invitation today is smaller. Start with two hours.
Once a week, pick two consecutive hours. Any two. Sunday afternoon, Saturday morning, Wednesday evening, whatever fits your life. Then, in those two hours, you keep three simple rules.
One. No work. No email, no admin, no life-tasks. If a task feels like a job, it is not for these two hours.
Two. No screens. Not the phone. Not the laptop. Not scrolling passively. Screens are the enemy of Sabbath because they never let your mind actually settle.
Three. Do something that returns you to yourself and to God. Walk. Read scripture. Sit outside. Nap. Pray without an agenda. Cook slowly. Talk to someone you love without a hidden purpose. The activity does not matter. The refusal of productivity does.
Two hours. Once a week. That is the whole practice.
You will feel awkward at first. Modern people do. We have forgotten how to be un-productive. You will reach for your phone reflexively. You will feel guilty for "wasting" the time. That is exactly the withdrawal symptom of a soul that has been overworked, and it is proof of how badly you need this practice.
Within about a month, if you keep it, the two hours will start feeling like the most important two hours of your week. Not because anything specific happens in them. Because they become the place where your soul remembers what it is like to just be, without earning anything.
That is Sabbath. Small. Weekly. Non-negotiable. Start with two hours.
YOUR ONE THING FOR TODAY
Pick your two hours for this week and put them in your calendar right now. Actual calendar. Actual time. Non-negotiable. See what happens.
A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Father, forgive me for treating Sabbath as optional. Teach me to stop, even for two hours, and let you tend to me. Meet me in the un-productive time. Amen.

If today's post landed, this is one of my most watched videos on the channel. Eight small minutes on how to reset and return to God without needing hours or complicated routines.
OVER TO YOU
When are your two hours this week? Tell me the day and time. Committing out loud makes you far more likely to do it.
