Rest: The Prophet God Let Sleep
There is a story in 1 Kings where God does something you would never expect a preacher to do.
He lets his most tired prophet go to sleep. Twice. Without saying a word about it.
This week's theme: Rest.
Today, the prophet who collapsed under a broom tree, and the God who fed him before he preached at him.
Elijah had just won.
He had gone up against four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel and called down fire from heaven. It was the most public spiritual victory of his life. Then Queen Jezebel put a price on his head, and Elijah, in the emotional crash that always follows a peak, ran for his life into the wilderness, sat down under a broom tree, and told God he wanted to die.
He said, "I have had enough, Lord. Take my life."
Then he fell asleep.
Now read what God did next.
"All at once an angel touched him and said, 'Get up and eat.' He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again." - 1 Kings 19:5-6
Notice what God did not do.
He did not appear to Elijah in glory and lecture him on faithlessness. He did not rebuke him for wanting to die. He did not accuse him of throwing away his ministry after a bad day. He did not remind him that he had just called down fire from heaven and this was not the response of a mature prophet.
He sent an angel with food, let him eat, and let him sleep again.
Then, after he had slept twice, the angel came a second time and said, "get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you." And after Elijah had eaten, only then did God do the famous encounter, the wind and the earthquake and the fire and the whisper.
The order matters.
Food. Sleep. Food. Sleep. Then teaching. That was God's response to a burnt out prophet in a spiritual crisis. Not lecture. Not correction. Care.
Modern Christianity often gets this backwards. It expects you to spiritually push through exhaustion. It treats needing rest as a lack of faith. It offers you five more Bible verses when what you actually need is a sandwich and a nap.
God is more pastoral than that.
If you are collapsed under your own broom tree right now, you are in good company. Elijah has been there. And you may be surprised to find that the first thing God wants to give you is not a sermon. It is a meal and a rest.
You are not disqualified from the ministry God has for your life because you are exhausted. You are just tired. And he knows what tired needs.
YOUR ONE THING FOR TODAY
If you have been pushing through exhaustion in the name of faithfulness, stop. Eat something nourishing. Sleep an extra hour tonight. Let those be spiritual acts today. Because they are.
A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Father, thank you that you meet me with care before you meet me with correction. Feed me. Let me rest. Speak to me only after you have loved me back to strength. Amen.
