Rest: The Rest You Have Been Trying To Earn

There is a specific kind of tired that sleep does not fix.

You know the one. You go to bed early and wake up still carrying it. You have a lazy Sunday and by Sunday evening it is still there. You take an actual holiday and by day three you notice it has come with you. Whatever it is, it is not solved by sleep or time off. And most of the standard advice about rest keeps failing to touch it.

That is because the tired underneath your tired is not physical.

This week's theme: Rest.

Today, what Jesus actually meant when he said "come to me and I will give you rest," and why it is not what most of us have been trying to get from God for years.

Jesus said one of the most inviting sentences in scripture in Matthew 11.

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." - Matthew 11:28-30

Read it slowly.

The word for "rest" in the Greek here is anapausis. It does not mean sleep. It means a specific kind of refreshment, a deep interior settling, a soul at ease. Jesus is not offering you a nap. He is offering you a quality of being that most people never experience.

And notice what he offers with it. A yoke.

That is a strange gift, if you have not thought about it before. Come to me for rest, and I will give you a yoke. A yoke is a wooden frame put across the shoulders of oxen so they can carry work together. It is a symbol of labour, not leisure. So what is Jesus doing?

He is telling you that rest is not the absence of work. It is the absence of the wrong yoke.

The tired underneath your tired is almost always the weight of a yoke you were never meant to carry. The pressure to be enough. The pressure to fix everything. The pressure to hold it all together. The pressure to earn your place in every room you walk into.

Jesus is not offering to remove work from your life. He is offering to swap the yoke.

This week we are going to walk through rest from a few angles. Tomorrow we look at a prophet God let sleep before he preached at him. Wednesday, what tired actually looks like when it is not about sleep. Thursday, a practice. Friday, the hard truth about why we will not rest. Saturday, back to the Hebrew. Sunday, Psalm 131.

For now, one question.

What yoke are you carrying that Jesus never asked you to?

YOUR ONE THING FOR TODAY

Sit somewhere quiet for two minutes today. Notice the weight you have been carrying. You do not have to put it down yet. Just notice it. Naming a burden is the first step to swapping it.

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father, I have been carrying yokes you did not give me. Show me which ones are yours to keep and which ones I need to hand back. Give me the rest Jesus offered. Not sleep. The other kind. Amen.

OVER TO YOU

What is one yoke you suspect you are carrying that Jesus never gave you? A word or a line. Every reply read.

God bless you, my friend.
