Receiving: The Practice Of Letting It Land
Receiving, like most spiritual disciplines, is a muscle. And most modern Christians have let it atrophy.
You know this if you have ever tried to just sit with a compliment. Or accept help without immediately planning how to repay it. Or let someone pray for you without deflecting. The impulse to push the gift away is automatic, and it is fast, and by the time you have noticed it, you have already deflected.
This week's theme: Receiving.
Today, the practical. One small daily practice that rebuilds the receiving muscle without needing anyone else in the room.
Here is the whole practice. Three minutes. Once a day.
Sit somewhere quiet. Set a timer for three minutes. Then, in silence, go through this order.
One. Name one thing God has given you today.
Not a big thing. A small one. The bed you slept in. The coffee you are holding. The fact that you woke up at all. The person who texted you. The verse that came to mind unbidden this morning. Whatever it is. Name it silently or out loud.
Two. Let it land.
This is where the practice actually happens. Do not move on. Do not thank God quickly and go to the next thing. Sit with the specific gift for at least thirty seconds. Feel that it was given, not earned. Feel that you did not deserve it, and it came anyway. Feel the giver behind the gift.
Your instinct will be to keep moving. Do not. Stay. Let it land.
Three. Say thank you. And nothing else.
No deflection. No "I don't deserve this." No "I will try to be more worthy." No spiritual promise about what you will do in return. Just thank you.
Then the three minutes are over.
Read what David wrote.
"What shall I return to the Lord for all his goodness to me? I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord." - Psalm 116:12-13
Read the question. What shall I return.
That is the question every receiver asks. What do I owe now? How do I balance this? How do I make it fair?
David's answer is the opposite of what most of us would give.
He does not say "I will serve harder." He does not say "I will earn my keep." He does not list what he will do in exchange.
He says he will lift up the cup of salvation. Meaning he will receive more. His response to being given so much is not to try to repay it. It is to open his hands wider and receive again.
That is the whole logic of the receiving life. The proper response to grace is not repayment. It is more receiving.
If you can build the muscle to receive one small thing a day, deliberately, without deflecting, you will slowly become a different kind of Christian. Not one who serves less. One who serves out of a fullness of what has been received, rather than out of a debt of what needs to be paid back.
Do the three minutes today. Notice how uncomfortable it feels the first few times. That is the muscle rebuilding.
YOUR ONE THING FOR TODAY
Do the three minute practice today. Name one gift. Let it land. Say thank you. That is it. Set a timer if you need to. Come back to it tomorrow.
A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Father, teach me the discipline of letting your gifts land. Slow me down when I want to deflect. Help me lift the cup rather than try to pay you back. Amen.
