Receiving: The Thing You Are Bad At
Watch what happens the next time someone tries to give you something.
A compliment. A gift. An offer of help. A kind word you did not expect. Watch what your body does in the second after.
Most of us deflect. Almost immediately. "Oh, you shouldn't have." "It was nothing." "I don't deserve it." "I'll get you back next week." Whatever the specific words are, the movement is always in the same direction. Push it away. Balance the scales. Do not let it just land.
We have been trained to think this is humility. It is not. It is a specific inability to receive, and it has been quietly shaping our life with God more than we realise.
This week's theme: Receiving.
Today, why receiving is genuinely harder than earning, and why almost every spiritual growth problem is a receiving problem underneath.
Read what John writes.
"Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God." - John 1:12
Notice the verb. Received.
John does not say "to all who worked hard enough for him." He does not say "to all who earned their way in." He does not say "to all who understood the theology properly." He says received. The whole gospel is delivered as something you receive, not as something you achieve.
That should be good news. For most of us, it is quietly bad news.
Because deep down, we would rather earn. Earning keeps us in charge. Earning means we know where we stand. Earning means the transaction is fair and we cannot be surprised by grace we did not deserve.
Receiving is different. Receiving requires us to sit with the fact that we needed the gift, that we could not have paid for it, that the giver chose to give it anyway. That is uncomfortable. It exposes us. It puts us in a position of quiet dependence we spend most of our life trying to avoid.
Most of the frustrations of modern Christian life are receiving problems disguised as something else.
You cannot feel God's love, because you are still trying to earn it.
You cannot rest in his forgiveness, because you keep trying to pay for what he already paid for.
You cannot walk in your identity, because you are still striving for a version of it he already gave you.
Every one of those is the same problem. Somewhere along the way, we decided we would rather work than receive. And the work never quite delivers what receiving would have given us for free.
This week we are going to walk through receiving from several angles. Tomorrow, a Syrian general who almost missed his healing because it was too simple. Wednesday, the specific ways we deflect what God is offering. Thursday, a small receiving practice. Friday, the hard truth about why we prefer to earn. Saturday, the Greek word lambano. Sunday, Psalm 116.
For now, one question.
If God is offering, why are you still trying to earn?
YOUR ONE THING FOR TODAY
Notice one moment today when you deflect something someone offers you. A compliment, help, kindness. When you catch yourself deflecting, stop. Say "thank you." That is the whole practice.
A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Father, forgive me for the times I have tried to earn what you were already offering. Teach me this week to receive. Not to deserve. Not to balance. Just to receive. Amen.
