Prayer: When Prayer Becomes A Performance
There is one warning Jesus gave about prayer that most sermons quietly skip.
It is uncomfortable. It cuts. And it names a specific problem that lives inside a lot of modern Christian life, dressed up in spiritual language.
This week's theme: Prayer.
Today, the hard truth. What happens when prayer stops being talking to God and starts being a performance we are quietly watching ourselves give.
Read Jesus's words.
"When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you." - Matthew 6:5-6
Notice how sharp Jesus is.
He does not say the hypocrites are terrible people. He says they are performing. Their prayer is real prayer, technically. Words. To God. But it is happening with an eye on the audience.
The audience does not have to be a physical crowd. It can be an internal one. Yourself, watching yourself pray, judging whether the prayer was spiritual enough. A husband or wife you are hoping is impressed by your maturity. A small group who might notice how deep your prayer was. Or God himself, whom we quietly perform for as if he needed to be sold on us.
Any prayer that has an audience other than God is a prayer with a problem.
Here is the hard truth. Most of us do this more than we know.
We pray in the accepted spiritual vocabulary. We use the phrases we have heard other Christians use. We craft our prayers, even in private, to sound the way we think a mature Christian's prayer should sound. And in the middle of all that performance, we are quietly not actually talking to God. We are performing spirituality with God as the theatrical excuse.
The tell is when you cannot pray plainly. When you would be embarrassed to pray in normal, non-spiritual language. When your prayers do not sound like you when you are just being you. That is the signal that a performance has slipped in.
Jesus's solution is not more religious vocabulary. It is less. Go to a room. Close the door. Take off the audience. Then pray in your actual voice.
Some of the deepest prayers you will ever pray will be ones you would be embarrassed to say in public. Not because they are wrong. Because they are honest. And honesty always sounds less impressive than performance.
Drop the audience. Talk to God plainly. He is not grading the vocabulary. He is waiting for the real you.
YOUR ONE THING FOR TODAY
Pray one prayer today in your normal voice. No spiritual language. No polished phrases. Just talk to God like you would talk to someone you trust. See what happens.
A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Father, forgive me for the times I have performed prayer instead of praying it. Strip away the audience. Teach me to talk to you plainly. Meet the real me. Amen.
OVER TO YOU
What is one prayer you have been dressing up that you could pray plainly instead? A word or a line. Every reply held with care.
God bless you, my friend.
