God bless you, now let's get into it.
It's Sunday.
No teaching today. No deep dive. Just one image, from one Psalm, at the end of a week about the hunger underneath everything.
This week's theme: Hunger.
Today, we rest with the sons of Korah, and the deer they saw at the water.
PSALM 42
Psalm 42 opens with one of the most quoted images in the Bible.
"As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God."
Read it slowly.
The image is specific. Not a deer walking casually to a stream on a summer morning. A panting deer. A creature that has been running. A body that has passed the point of thirst and is now audibly labouring, chest heaving, pushing on because the water is somewhere ahead and the alternative is collapse.
That is the picture the Psalmist reaches for when he wants to describe honest hunger for God.
Not decorum. Not politeness. Not a mild interest. A panting, running, thirsty animal that knows it will not make it much further without a drink.
The whole week has been building toward this image.
You have looked at your restlessness. You have looked at your reaching. You have looked at the wells you keep drawing from. You have looked at Esau, and at the crowds who came back for more bread. You have thought about the word Jesus chose when he described a healthy hunger for God, and you have probably noticed, honestly, that your own hunger has been more polite than that.
Today you rest with an image that is more honest, and more hopeful, than any of it.
Because notice what the deer does. The deer does not stop and consult a map. The deer does not question whether it deserves the water. The deer does not perform its thirst. The deer just moves toward the water it has scented in the air, because everything in it knows that is where life is.
That is the image. That is you today.
You do not have to have a perfect hunger. You do not have to have arrived. You do not have to have understood the whole week. You just have to move, in whatever pant is left in you, toward the water.
He is the water. He has been the water the whole time.
Rest today. Speak little. Do less. Sit somewhere quiet and read the Psalm slowly, and let it be your prayer.
Whatever this week surfaced, whatever you saw about your hunger, whatever wells you noticed you had been drawing from, put all of it down for today. He is not asking you to fix it. He is only asking you to come.
The stream is right there.
YOUR ONE THING FOR TODAY
Read Psalm 42:1 out loud once today, slowly.
Then say the second half as your own. "So my soul pants for you, my God."
That is enough. There is nothing else to do.
Father, thank you for this week. Thank you for the honesty you have drawn out of me about what I have been chasing, and where I have been drawing water. Today I rest. Be the stream. Meet me here. My soul pants for you. Amen.
OVER TO YOU
