God bless you, now let's get into it.

Watch what happens the next time you feel restless.

Not tired. Not hungry for food. Just that low, background restlessness that shows up on an ordinary evening, when everything is technically fine, but something in you is scanning for something else. You reach for your phone. Or the fridge, even though you're not really hungry. Or a browser tab. Or a plan. Or a purchase. Or another episode of something you weren't really watching.

You are hungry. You just have not stopped to ask what for.

This week's theme: Hunger.

Today, why almost all of us are trying to feed a spiritual hunger with something material, and never quite understanding why we keep coming away empty.

HUNGER

Jesus said something in the Sermon on the Mount that most Christians can quote and almost none of us actually live.

"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled."

Matthew 5:6

There is a specific promise here, and it is conditional.

The people who will be filled are the people whose hunger is aimed at the right thing.

Notice the language. Jesus doesn't say blessed are those who don't feel hunger. He doesn't say the spiritually mature no longer want anything. He assumes you will hunger for something. The whole question is what.

Because if you point that hunger at righteousness — the presence of God, the shape of his kingdom, the reordering of your life to align with his — you will be filled. That is the promise.

But if you point that same hunger at anything else, the hunger stays. Whatever you feed it doesn't take. You get the thing, and the hunger is still there twenty minutes later, and you go looking for the next thing.

You know this pattern. Everyone does.

The person who thought this job would settle them, and now, six months in, they are already thinking about the next job. The person who thought this relationship would fill the gap, and now, two years in, they are quietly restless again. The person who bought the thing they were sure they needed, and used it once, and cannot remember where it is now.

None of these are moral failures. They are diagnostic. They are your soul telling you, over and over, that the hunger you have been feeding is not the hunger you actually have.

Augustine wrote a sentence sixteen hundred years ago that has never stopped being true. He said God has made us for himself, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in him.

Restless is the word. Not empty. Not depressed. Not in crisis. Restless. The specific quality of a spiritual hunger being fed the wrong food.

Modern life makes this problem enormously worse in one specific way. It gives you more wrong food than any generation in human history has ever had access to. In the space of thirty seconds you can order almost anything, scroll through almost anyone, watch almost anything, buy almost anything. The wrong foods are infinite and instant.

Which means you can spend an entire lifetime feeding a spiritual hunger with material things and never quite notice that the hunger has not moved.

You will just be tired. And a bit restless. And slightly confused about why nothing seems to land.

This week we are going to walk through that hunger from a few different angles. Tomorrow we look at a woman who met Jesus at a well and was told she had been drinking from the wrong source her whole life. Wednesday, why the crowds who ate the loaves came back the next day still empty. Thursday, a small practice for redirecting the hunger. Friday, the hard truth of what Esau traded his birthright for. Saturday, back to the Greek, and what "hunger and thirst" actually means in the Beatitude. Sunday we rest with Psalm 42.

For now, one question.

What do you keep reaching for when you are restless, and what does it never quite deliver?

YOUR ONE THING FOR TODAY

Notice one moment today when you feel restless.

You do not have to do anything about it yet. Just notice what you reach for. The phone. The snack. The scroll. The plan. The purchase.

Awareness first. That is how the week begins.

Father, I have been hungry for the wrong things for so long I have stopped noticing. Show me this week what I am actually hungry for. Retrain my hunger toward you. Fill me with the one thing that fills, and let the wrong foods lose their pull. Amen.

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

OVER TO YOU

What do you reach for when you feel restless? If you want to, hit reply with one word. Phone. Fridge. Scroll. Plan. Purchase. I read every one.

God bless you, my friend.
