Hey my friend welcome to the latest edition of my newsletter, thanks for being here! If this blesses you, share it with someone who needs it. They can sign up free at thelowkeychristian.com/newsletter. God bless you, now let's get into it.

It's Sunday.

No in-depth teaching today. No huge deep dive. Just a name, and a few minutes to let it land.

This week's theme: Known.

Today, the last name. His.

HIS

There's a question underneath all the others.

This week we've walked through chosen, loved, forgiven, free, sent. Each one a name God gives you that overrides the names the world gave you. They matter. They've taken root in a few of you this week, judging by the replies.

But there's one question they all rest on. Who do you belong to?

Most of us answer this without ever asking it out loud. We belong to our work. Our family. Our partner. The version of ourselves we're trying to become. All of those will shift. Jobs change. Children grow up. The version of yourself you're trying to become changes its mind about itself.

If your sense of belonging is built on any of those, it's built on something that moves.

In the middle of an unlikely book of the Bible is a sentence that's been quoted at weddings for thousands of years without people realising what it does.

❝

"I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine."

Song of Solomon 6:3

The Song of Solomon, on the surface, is a love poem between two human lovers. But the long tradition of the church has read it also as a picture of the relationship between God and his people. The simplest sentence becomes the deepest available description of the basic identity of a believer.

I am his.

Not I do things for him. Not I am improving for him. Not I am trying to deserve him. I am his. Before the doing. Before the improving. Before the deserving.

Belonging is first. Everything else flows out of it.

This is why this week ends here. The previous five names are all true because of this one.

Identity built on doing is exhausting. Identity built on belonging is solid. Doing has good days and bad days. Belonging does not. He is not less yours on the day you fail him. You are not less his on the day you forget him.

The covenant does not move with the weather.

This is the verse to come back to when the others feel hard.

There will be days when chosen, loved, forgiven, free, sent all feel like words on a page. They will not feel like you. The wound will be louder than the truth. On those days, you don't have to summon up all five. You only have to remember one.

His.

Because if you are his, the rest is taken care of. They are all expressions of one foundational fact. You are his. That does not change tomorrow. It does not change with the news. It does not change with how you feel about yourself when you wake up.

Rest in that today.

YOUR ONE THING FOR TODAY

When anyone asks who you are today, answer with this first.

Out loud or in your head. "His."

You can be the other things too. The parent. The professional. The friend. The version of yourself you're still becoming. But you say his first, even silently, so that everything else is built on it.

❝

Father, before all the names, you. Before all the doing, you. I am yours, and you are mine. Let that be enough for today, and the next day, and every day I am given. Help me rest in belonging. Amen.

A PRAYER FOR TODAY
