Gratitude: The Five Minute Practice

Gratitude, like every spiritual muscle, will not build by accident.

You can read about it. You can agree with it in principle. You can nod at every sermon on it and never actually build it. The only way the muscle grows is by doing something small, deliberately, every day, for long enough that it stops feeling like effort.

This week's theme: Gratitude.

Today, the practical. One small daily practice that rebuilds the gratitude muscle in five minutes a day.

Here is the practice. It has three parts. You can do it in the morning, at night before bed, or in the middle of the day. The timing matters less than the consistency.

One. Name three specific gifts from the last twenty-four hours.

Not the general ones. Not "my family, my health, my faith." Those are true but they are too abstract to build a muscle. You want specific.

A specific meal you ate. A specific message someone sent. A specific ten minutes in your day when something felt right. A specific moment of unexpected quiet. The way the sky looked when you left the house this morning. The joke that made you laugh out loud yesterday.

Write them down if you can. Say them out loud even if you cannot. The point is to make the gifts specific enough to actually see.

Two. Trace each gift back to the giver.

Once you have named the three gifts, do one more small thing. For each one, notice who gave it. Some of them came from God directly. Some came from another human that God moved to give it to you. Some came through circumstances only God arranged.

You do not have to be theologically precise about which is which. You just have to notice that behind every good gift is someone who chose to give it. That someone, ultimately, is God.

Three. Say thank you.

Out loud. Even if it feels awkward. Even if no one else is in the room. Especially if no one else is in the room.

Thank God for each of the three gifts by name. Not a sweeping prayer. A specific one. "Thank you for the coffee this morning." "Thank you for the message from my sister." "Thank you for the way the light hit the trees on the walk home."

That is the whole practice. Five minutes.

Read what David wrote.

"Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name." - Psalm 100:4

Notice what David is describing. He is describing entering God's presence with a specific posture. Thanksgiving first. Praise second. Not requests. Not confessions. Thanksgiving.

That order matters. When you approach God with a list of what you want, the relationship gets tilted quickly toward transaction. When you approach him first with thanks, you are entering the room the way David describes it. You are meeting him from a settled place, not a needy one.

The five minute practice trains that muscle. Over a week, it will feel small. Over a month, it will feel different. Over a year, you will look back and realise your entire orientation toward God has shifted. Not because of one dramatic moment. Because you built a small daily rhythm that over time became who you are.

Start today.

YOUR ONE THING FOR TODAY

Do the five minute practice today. Three gifts. The giver behind each. Thank you out loud. Come back tomorrow.

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father, teach me to enter your presence with thanks. Slow me down enough for the five minutes today. Rebuild the muscle. Then come back to me tomorrow when I need it again. Amen.

WATCH MY NEW VIDEO

If today's practice landed, my new video is a gift you can give yourself in the same ten minutes. The entire Old Testament story, creation to Christ, walked through in one sitting. You will never read scripture the same way again once you can see the whole arc at once.

The Bible Explained: The Entire Old Testament in 10 Minutes (Creation to Christ).

OVER TO YOU

What were your three specific gifts today? Send back one, or all three. Every reply read.

God bless you, my friend.
