Hey my friend welcome to the latest edition of my newsletter, thanks for being here! If this blesses you, share it with someone who needs it. They can sign up free at thelowkeychristian.com/newsletter. God bless you, now let's get into it.

I went back.

Not to anything dramatic. Just a pattern I thought I'd left behind. A way of thinking. A version of me that's quieter, more anxious, more careful. I caught myself there last week and realised I'd been there for days without noticing.

That's the bit no one warns you about.

This week's theme: Known.

Today, the fourth name. Free.

FREE

You can be technically free and functionally still a slave.

Slavery to fear. You organise your life around what you're afraid of. You don't take the job. You don't have the conversation. You make decisions to avoid the worst case rather than to move toward the best one.

Slavery to shame. You've decided, somewhere deep, that something about you is wrong. You've been organising your life to either hide it or make up for it.

Slavery to expectations. Someone told you a long time ago who you were supposed to be. You've been performing that script for so long you've forgotten there was ever an alternative.

The lie underneath all three is the same. Freedom is not actually for you. Other people get to be free. You have to be careful.

Then Paul writes one of the most defiant sentences in the New Testament.

❝

"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery."

Galatians 5:1

He doesn't say Christ has freed us from some things. He says it is for freedom, full stop, that he did it. Freedom is not a side effect of salvation. Freedom is the point.

Then the warning. Notice the word "again."

Paul knows. The danger of having been a slave is that even after you've been freed, you'll keep wearing the chains out of habit. The fight isn't to get free. That fight has been won. The fight is to stop volunteering yourself back into bondage.

The Israelites had been slaves in Egypt for four hundred years.

Four hundred years is too long for anyone to remember another way of living. By the time Moses showed up, slavery wasn't a condition. It was an identity. They knew how to be slaves. They knew the cadence of the work, the language of the overseers. They were miserable, but they were fluent.

Then God brought them out. Plagues, parted sea, the whole thing. They walked out of Egypt as free people for the first time in four centuries.

And what did they do, almost immediately?

They complained about the food. They missed what they'd eaten in Egypt. "We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost, also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic." That's Numbers 11. They're in the wilderness, eating manna from heaven, on their way to a promised land, and they're wistful for the menu in their old prison.

Here's the hard truth. Freedom is harder than slavery in the short term. Slavery is exhausting, but it's legible. You know your role. You don't have to choose. Freedom asks you to decide who you are now, without the comfortable structure of the cage.

Most people, given the choice, will choose the cage. Especially in the first few weeks.

You probably have your own Egypt. The pattern of thinking you grew up with. The dynamic you keep reproducing. The fear you keep deferring to. The version of yourself you keep returning to because it's familiar, even though it's killing you.

The chain isn't fastened. You're holding it shut.

YOUR ONE THING FOR TODAY

Identify one chain you've been wearing out of habit.

Then refuse it once this week. Just once. The fear says don't apply for that. Apply. The shame says don't show up. Go. The expectation says you have to say yes. Say no.

You won't dismantle the whole script in a week. The goal is to prove to yourself, in a small way, that the chain isn't actually fastened.

❝

Father, you set me free. Show me today the chains I've been wearing out of habit. Give me the courage to refuse one of them. Help me stop going back to Egypt for the food. Help me stand firm. Amen.
