There's a moment from years ago I still replay at 3am.

I won't go into it. You have one too. The specific thing. The pattern, or the conversation, or the period of your life you keep carrying around like a debt you're still paying.

This week's theme: Known.

Today, the third name. Forgiven.

FORGIVEN

Most of us only half believe in forgiveness.

We accept it in theory. We've heard it preached. But when it comes to ourselves, particularly to the thing we keep coming back to, something in us still holds the receipt. We dress it up in spiritual language. We say we're still processing. We say we're taking it seriously.

What we actually mean is that we don't think we deserve it. And by withholding forgiveness from ourselves, we're quietly continuing to pay for what someone else already paid for.

This is one of the oldest tricks of the enemy. He doesn't have to stop you believing in forgiveness. He just has to convince you that yours is the exception.

Then John writes the most surgical sentence in scripture about this.

❝

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."

1 John 1:9

Read those two adjectives slowly. Faithful. Just. Not reluctant. Not hesitant. Not depending on how sorry you sounded. Faithful, meaning he does it every time you ask. Just, meaning it's the right and lawful outcome. The debt has been paid.

And then look at the second half. Not most of your unrighteousness. All. The thing you named, and the thing you didn't. All of it. Washed.

Peter knew about this kind of forgiveness.

He'd promised Jesus he'd die for him. Hours later he was standing by a charcoal fire in a courtyard, and a servant girl asked if he was one of the disciples. He said no. Another asked. He said no, more firmly. A third asked. He cursed, and swore, and said he did not know the man.

The rooster crowed. He went outside and wept bitterly.

That's where most stories end. With the failure named, the regret confirmed, the man going home to live with what he'd done. That's not what happens.

After the resurrection, Jesus shows up on a beach. They eat breakfast. And then, sitting next to a charcoal fire, Jesus asks Peter a question. Three times. Once for each denial.

The fire was the same on purpose. Jesus wasn't avoiding the wound. He took Peter back to the smell of it. Then quietly overwrote the three denials with three commissions. Do you love me? Yes Lord. Feed my sheep. Do you love me? Yes Lord. Feed my sheep. Do you love me? Yes Lord. Feed my sheep.

Jesus didn't just forgive Peter. He restored him. The man who would preach the gospel to thousands at Pentecost was the same man who, weeks earlier, swore he didn't know who Jesus was.

You may know in your head that you're forgiven. The work is to stop living as though you're not.

YOUR ONE THING FOR TODAY

Name the thing today. The specific one. Not in vague terms.

Then say this out loud. "This is forgiven. I'm not paying for it anymore."

If you cry, good. If you feel nothing, also good. The point isn't to summon a feeling. The point is to put yourself, with your own voice, on the record.

❝

Father, I confess what I've been carrying. You know what it is. Thank you that you are faithful, and just, and have already washed me clean. Help me today to stop paying for what you have already paid. Help me put it down, and not pick it up again. Amen.

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

OVER TO YOU

What's the one sentence you'd say out loud today if you could really believe it was forgiven? Hit reply. I read every one.

God bless you, my friend.
