Fear Not: The Most Repeated Command In Scripture
There is a command in scripture that appears more than any other.
By some counts, "do not be afraid" or its close variants shows up 365 times in the Bible. One for every day of the year. Whether the exact number is precise or not, the point stands. God, over and over, from Genesis to Revelation, tells his people the same thing.
Do not be afraid.
He says it to Abraham. He says it to Moses. He says it to Joshua before Jericho. He says it to Isaiah, to Jeremiah, to Daniel. He says it through angels to Mary and Joseph and the shepherds on the hillside. He says it through his own voice to the disciples in the boat during the storm. He says it, again and again, until it becomes impossible to miss.
Read the anchor verse for the week.
"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." - Isaiah 41:10
Notice the structure. God does not say "do not fear" and leave you there. He follows it, every time, with a reason. For I am with you. For I am your God. I will strengthen you. I will help you. I will uphold you.
The command is not naive optimism. It is not "cheer up." It is a command rooted in a specific promise. Do not be afraid because you are not alone in this. The God who has kept every promise he has ever made is present, active, and holding you.
If you had to summarise the pastoral heart of God in one command, this would be it.
Which raises an obvious question. If God is so insistent that we not live afraid, why are so many of us walking around gripped by anxiety?
There is a version of the answer that blames us. That says our fear is a lack of faith and we should just try harder. I do not find that version helpful. Real fear rarely responds to being scolded.
There is a better version. It says that fear is normal to being human, and God knows it, and that is precisely why he says "do not be afraid" so often. Not to shame us. To pastor us. To remind us, again and again, that we do not have to walk this alone.
This week we are going to walk through fear from a few different angles. Tomorrow we look at Peter walking on the water. Wednesday we look at what fear actually costs a life over time. Thursday, a practical for naming your fear. Friday, the fear underneath the fear. Saturday, the Hebrew. Sunday, Psalm 23.
For now, one question.
What are you currently afraid of?
YOUR ONE THING FOR TODAY
Name one specific fear you have been carrying, quietly, this week. Do not fix it. Just name it. You cannot deal with what you refuse to acknowledge.
A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Father, thank you for saying "do not be afraid" so many times you made sure I could not miss it. Meet me this week in the specific places where fear has been running the decisions. Remind me you are with me. Amen.
